REAL IMPACT SINCE 2011
Since 2011, Grooveschool has supported more than 400 young people and community participants across South London through creative mentoring, music, media and technology.
Our work consistently demonstrates strong engagement, with average attendance around 80% across programmes and participants reporting increased creative confidence and improved wellbeing.
But impact is not only found in statistics.
We see change when someone returns consistently, completes a first piece of creative work, begins contributing to a group, performs publicly, supports another participant or takes a next step into volunteering, education, employment or leadership.
These outcomes develop through relationships, participation, consistency and opportunities to take increasing responsibility.
How We Understand Change
Impact at Grooveschool is understood through both evidence and experience.
We track attendance and progression. We observe creative and personal development over time. We listen to participants, families and partner settings. We look at the work people create and the responsibilities they begin to take on.
Depending on the programme, this can include:
– Participation and attendance
– Creative skills and independence
– Confidence and self-expression
– Communication and relationships
– Wellbeing and sense of belonging
– Responsibility and leadership
– Completed creative work and real-world experience
– Continued engagement and positive progression
Finished tracks, DJ sets, performances, podcasts, films and other creative outputs provide visible evidence of participation, but they are only part of the story.
Progression is not always linear. Sometimes significant change is a qualification, internship or job. Sometimes it is returning the following week, speaking in a group for the first time or choosing to share something you’ve created.
Both matter.
Creative Journeys
Behind every statistic is a real story.
Sheriff began as a young person who struggled to speak in group settings. Through long-term mentoring, he developed the confidence to perform publicly, assist in sessions and begin building a professional DJ career.
Kira progressed from self-taught experimentation at home to performing live, producing music in Ableton and securing her first professional bookings.
Jasmine balanced study and caring responsibilities while developing her production skills, eventually progressing into a studio assistant role at Abbey Road.
Jacob moved from Grooveschool sessions into university study in music production and business, performing at major events and managing a Grooveschool release.
Louis transformed school disengagement into a pathway through music, progressing into college, mentoring roles and regular performance within London’s underground scene.
Each journey is different. What connects them is the opportunity to participate, develop relationships, build confidence and gradually take greater responsibility.
Change Doesn't Have One Destination
Progression at Grooveschool is personal.
For one person it might mean performing publicly. For another it could mean completing a track, travelling independently, returning to education, volunteering, supporting another participant or gaining their first paid creative opportunity.
Our role is not to prescribe a single destination. It is to create the relationships, environments and opportunities that help people discover what their next step might be.
